Chelsea’s search for a new goalkeeper has hit a stumbling block, as reports suggest that Inter Milan’s Andre Onana is set to reject a move to Stamford Bridge.
The Dutch international has been linked with a move to Chelsea in recent weeks, with Frank Lampard reportedly keen to add a new shot-stopper to his squad. However, it now appears that Onana is not interested in a move to London, and is instead looking for a different challenge.
Onana has been a key player for Ajax over the past few seasons, helping the Dutch giants to win the Eredivisie title and reach the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2019. He is widely regarded as one of the best young goalkeepers in Europe, and has attracted interest from several top clubs across the continent.
Despite his impressive form, Onana has been linked with a move away from Inter Milan in recent months. Chelsea were said to be among the frontrunners for his signature, but it now appears that the 24-year-old has other ideas.
Although, Inter has not been the strongest team in Italy this season, Inter Milan is finishing the campaign on a high note by being in contention to win two further trophies. With Napoli possibly being picked apart by bigger clubs, Inter has a chance to reclaim the Scudetto crown they last won in 2021.
However, this will depend on their ability to hold onto their top players. Although Inter has had financial problems in recent years, their Champions League run may have helped ease the situation. Onana, who is not afraid to make big decisions, has been linked to a move to the Premier League but it seems unlikely while Inter is on the verge of such success.
Does Onana Want To Leave?
According to reports in Italy, Onana is keen to test himself in a new league, with the Premier League not high on his list of priorities. He is said to be open to a move to Spain or Germany, where he would have the opportunity to play in a different style of football.
This news will come as a blow to Chelsea, who are in need of a new goalkeeper following a disappointing season for Kepa Arrizabalaga. The Spanish international has struggled for form and confidence, leading Lampard to look for a replacement.
There are other options available to Chelsea, however. The likes of Jan Oblak, Nick Pope and Dean Henderson have all been linked with the club in recent weeks, and could be potential targets for Lampard.
It remains to be seen who Chelsea will ultimately sign as their new goalkeeper, but it appears that Andre Onana will not be the man to fill the void. The Dutch international is set to snub a move to Stamford Bridge, and will instead look for a new challenge elsewhere.
