Chelsea head coach Graham Potter has explained why Mykhailo Mudryk has been dropped for recent games, saying that the Ukrainian’s development is not a straight road. Mudryk was signed by Chelsea from Shakhtar Donetsk during the January transfer window for a fee that could reach €100m, after it seemed he would sign for Arsenal.

Mudryk impressed on his debut as a substitute in a 0-0 draw at Liverpool, but struggled when featuring from the start in games that followed and has since been relegated back to the bench. Potter was asked about his use of Mudryk ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Leicester City, revealing that there are “a lot of factors” when it comes to managing the winger.
Potter said that every player wants to play and it’s important that players play to improve, but at the same time, it’s not a straight road. He explained that sometimes you have to take a step away, sometimes you just need a bit of training time, and sometimes you need a breather. There are a lot of factors involved in managing a player’s development, and it’s not always a matter of simply playing them.

The coach’s comments suggest that Mudryk is still adapting to life at Chelsea, and that the club is taking a patient approach to his development. It’s possible that he will be given more game time in the future, but for now, the club is taking a cautious approach to ensure that he develops properly and doesn’t suffer from burnout or injury. With time and patience, Mudryk could become a key player for Chelsea, but for now, he will have to continue to work hard and wait for his chance to impress.
