During Manchester United’s match against Southampton on Sunday, midfielder Casemiro received a straight red card in the first half, leading to tears and consolations from his teammates. The Brazilian had been a transformative presence on the team since joining from Real Madrid for £60m in August, but suspensions have prevented him from playing as often as he and fans would have liked.

Casemiro had previously been banned due to an accumulation of yellow cards and a red card against Crystal Palace, missing several games. He will now serve a domestic four-game ban for the straight red against Southampton, which was increased from the usual three because it was his second offence.
Despite being known for playing tough but fair, Casemiro has received two straight red cards in quick succession for United in 2023 alone. He was never shown a straight red card in nearly 400 games for Real Madrid and Porto over a nine-year period.

The challenge on Southampton’s Carlos Alcaraz initially resulted in a yellow card, but it was upgraded to a red after a VAR intervention and second look. United decided not to submit an appeal, as it was unlikely to be successful.
Casemiro’s philosophy of playing tough but fair may have been the reason for his upset, as he has previously expressed a desire to never hurt an opponent. In a previous interview conducted while he was a Real Madrid player, Casemiro stated that he never goes in with studs to hurt a player and gets angry when others do so because of the values his mother taught him.
He believes in fouling as part of the game but never with malice, and he will always adhere to the values his mother taught him to never hurt anyone.
